Commissioner Sherry Plymale, a political scientist, has dedicated her career to community action and public policy. A resident of Palm City in Martin County since 1974, Commissioner Plymale previously served as the Director of Cabinet and Legislative Affairs and the Chief of Staff of the Florida Department of Education while Frank Brogan was the Commissioner. She also served as Chair of former Commissioner of Education Tom Gallagher’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Education Governance where she was charged with redesigning Florida’s education system and making schools more accountable in terms of outcomes for students.
In 2001, Commissioner Plymale was named to the Florida Atlantic University Board of Trustees by Governor Bush and served for 12 years and as Vice Chair and Chair during the first six years. During this time, she also served on the St. Leo University Board of Trustees, her Alma Mater. After the acquisition of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute by Florida Atlantic University in 2008, she became a member of its Foundation’s Board of Directors where she continues to serve to this day.
Commissioner Plymale initially got her start in local politics as a member of PTA which eventually led to leadership in the Republican Party of Florida as Vice Chair. She has always placed importance on community, county and state activities and has been involved with many professional boards and organizations including the Chamber of Commerce; YMCA Board and its state policy board; School Readiness Coalition; Healthy Kids Corporate Board; State Board of Community Colleges; YMCA National Assembly; Children’s Home Society State Board; Martin County Economic Steering Committee; Martin County Business Development Board; Leadership Martin; and Leadership Florida.
Commissioner Plymale received her bachelor’s degree from St. Leo University and is married to Dr. Tom Plymale, a dentist who recently retired from his General Dentistry practice. They are the proud parents of two successful children and enjoy spending time with their six grandchildren.
